Science Video Science Is Elementary: What's in Space?: The Earth, the Moon, and Space Flight

http://player.discoveryeducation.com/index.cfm?guidAssetId=1e5db970-db95-41c5-babd-1561e8494d30

In this video we learn that Earth is a planet, one of nine that orbit the sun. It takes Earth 365 days or one year to revolve once around the sun. It takes Earth 24 hours to rotate once on its axis; this gives us day and night. Because the axis of the earth is tilted, sunlight strikes the surface of the earth at different angles during different times of the year. More direct sunlight results in warmer temperatures while indirect sunlight produces cooler temperatures.

This is reflected in our seasons. A month is defined as the time it takes the moon to orbit the earth one time. Ocean tides are the result of the gravity of the moon pulling toward the earth. Galileo built the first telescope with which he was able to study features of the moon. We also learn the names of some early astronauts and what they accomplished. A trip to Mars will take a lot longer than did the trip astronauts took to the moon in the late 1960s.
